Getting to Know the Team Interview - Featuring Blake Bahora
In the Spotlight - Blake Bahora
It's time to formally introduce to you another Aurora Design Fabrics team member, the lovely Blake Bahora. Let's go through the questions and find a little bit more about her!
Name and what you do here at Aurora Designs?
Blake Bahora. I fill one of the admins position and do some design work.
How old were you when you learned to sew and who taught you?
My grandmother taught me when I was young; however, I never really did anything with the knowledge untill a few years ago.
What is your favorite and least favorite part about sewing?
My favorite part is creating patterns or modifying patterns. I have to create something better suited to my needs. My least favorite part is hemming. I really hate hemming, and if it doesn't need it I'm not going to.
What is your favorite thing you've ever made?
At the moment, my favorite thing I have made is a more formal type dress using one of our Andromeda (galaxy aztec ) strikes. It was my first time using chiffon too and I did a horrid job but love the final product even tho I have no reason to ever wear it.
If you could get any sewing item, what is at the very top of your list right now?
I really need a coverstitch. Not want, need. My husband says it's a want, but I disagree. Well, and serger thread. I just ran out again, so technically that is the very top of my list at the exact moment.
What is your current favorite pattern or pattern designer?
Hmm so many to choose from. I would say my favorite designer would have to be Kristi over at George and Ginger. I love her style. I also find my family wears a lot of patterns for pirates this time of year.
What is your favorite food?
Favorite food...I don't feel like I really have one. I love cooking, but don't eat half the things I cook for my family, so i never really developed a favorite food.
What's most watched on your Netflix?
Probably Grey's Anatomy. I research it as new seasons get uploaded.
Currently playing on Pandora?
Lindsey Stirling radio; although, it is normally Marren Morris.
What do you like to do in your spare time, other than sewing?
I really love spending all my non-sewing, non-cleaning, non-parenting moments with my animals. My boys (horses) had my heart before my husband and kids, and I still miss the time I use to have with them. I still try to make time for them. Life, unfortunately, dictates that it be less time than I would like, and it normally involves their chores instead of riding.
What did you want to be when you grow up?
Oh, so many things! A designer of all things (graphic, clothing, home/decor, property), artist, a trainer. My real heart dream though is I always dreamed of working to rehab horses and still kind of do, way, way off in the future. I want to be that old lady in the bedazzled outfit showing rescue horses.
Last but not least, what sewing advice would you give someone just starting out?
Just jump in and try it. YouTube the crap out of what you are wanting to do, buy cheap fabric and practice. Also, if you want to make knit clothing, get a serger as soon as you can afford it. It makes a world of difference.
